The extra space provided by a hardwood conservatory brings with it a myriad of design possibilities. Some home owners like the idea of extending their family home into this new area by using it as a new living room or dining room. However, others like the idea of giving this new space an identity distinct from the rest of the home, opting to invite the great outdoors into the home. In both cases, interior design can bring the concept to life. Bespoke conservatory design has expanded beyond the traditional, embracing some minor aspects of other structures. Some oak conservatories, for example, can appear almost like oak orangeries, with a greater degree of brickwork used than in traditional designs, though the prevalence of glazing remains, of course, a constant. Such designs can also incorporate modern features such as bi folding doors, and in doing so bring a greater versatility. However, regardless of the exterior appearance, the interior design of a conservatory can be anything that a home owner wants, and to that degree far more possibilities exist. Whether one prefers the luxurious or the simple, the contemporary or the traditional, the choice is down to the tastes and preferences of the owner. We look at four such design preferences, that can turn a conservatory into a distinguished living space. The Garden Cafe For many home owners, escaping into a fresh, calming place is the main motivation behind a conservatory in the first place. So, the garden is brought into the space through the use of potted plants, creating a green, lush refreshing feel. Terracotta tiles are used for the flooring, sealed for protection, while wrought iron garden furniture is used to complete what is, in essence, a garden cafe look. The result is a room that is refreshing to the senses, and an uncluttered haven from the rest of the world. The Reading Room Escaping the hassles of life means different things to different people, so while some may like the sparse earthiness of the garden cafe, others prefer the simple luxury of an armchair in which one can indulge in some reading. As a reading room, other furniture will typically include a bookshelf, small table and a simple table lamp for extra reading light. Modern design options often use the reading chair itself as the central item, with a distinct style that reflects the tastes of the owner, be they a wicker armchair, leather recliner or linen lounge chair. The flooring may be of ceramic tiles or hardwood planks, with a Persian rug, perhaps, to complete the look. The Alternative Living Room A conservatory could also serve as a second, or alternative, living room. If so, the furniture chosen can be similar to that usually used in a living room, such as a sofa set with coffee table. Owners may make use of the versatility of living room sectionals to maximise the seating options. The flooring is often wooden, dark stained and varnished to a high sheen, while lamps positioned about the room complete the living room look. Owners may also choose to install TV and music facilities, though this is dependent on personal preferences. Dining Room With a View The conservatory can also be used as a dining room where diners can benefit from a panoramic view of the garden or background scenery. This is especially effective when the conservatory is on the crest of a hill and looks over fields, or lakes or the sea. Bare of furniture except the dining room set in the centre, the size of which is dependent on the area available, some potted plants can be brought in to freshen the space and lessen any sense of emptiness. The flooring is generally tiled for two reasons. Firstly, it contributes to the light, uncluttered feeling that the space has and, secondly, with food commonly present, it allows for easy cleaning. If
bi folding doors are a feature included in the conservatory construction, then the fresh breeze can further refresh the dining experience. For every owner of an oak or
hardwood conservatory, the quality of its construction and beauty of its design can make home living so much more enjoyable. A distinct interior design can enhance the experience even further. And, of course, that stands for owners of
oak orangeries and garden rooms too.
